Since 2006, the Sunset Theatre is dedicated to developing new Canadian plays through its Exploration Series, Presentation Series, Production Series and the Moonrise Film Festival, a celebration of independent and student films. In addition, we host various concerts, community events and teen theatre workshops. Originally built in 1934 the Sunset Theatre is situated amongst the picturesque and rolling hills of the Cariboo Mountains in the old Gold-Mining town of Wells BC, year round population 250 and boasts a thriving tourist trade to near-by Barkerville Historic Park.
The Student Stage Manager (SSM) will lead and be responsible for all production meetings, running rehearsals, clerical organization, and insuring the smooth execution of the performances, including in-house productions as well as guest artists coming to the venue.
The SSM is part of the management team for the productions and his or her behavior should set an example in punctuality and professionalism. It is important that the ASM is flexible and will take initiative. Because each production is different, acknowledging that duties will change depending on the need of any given production.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES may include taping out the floorplan, copy and distribute scripts, pull rehearsal props and furniture, and help with any needed clerical help. Before each rehearsal, SSM will insure the stage or rehearsal space is ready. This could include sweeping, setting up furniture, set pieces, and props. During rehearsal the SSM will notate blocking, distribute notes as appropriate and adhere as closely to the CTA. During the run of the shows, the SSM will insure that all required production elements are pre-set ready for performance and be responsible for calling lighting and sound cues and will operate the board where need and if possible. The SSM will work during the ArtsWells Festival as needed. After rehearsals and/or performances, the SSM insure the facility is in safe-mode and locked up.
The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution with a focus on theatre production. Consideration will be given to high school students with a keen desire to pursue theatre as a profession. Strong organizational skills, flexible attitude, strong work ethic, strong computer skills (Excel), valid driver’s licence, strong written and verbal communication skills, willingness to live in a remote community with no cell phone service and limited internet access essential.
The Sunset Theatre is in the process of developing several plays with First Nations and Aboriginal content. Priority will be given to candidates that have knowledge of First Nations Protocols and sensitive to the Truth and Reconciliation process.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a CSJ position. All candidates must be able to legally work in Canada, be between the ages of 15 & 30; enrolled in school full time and intending to return to school in the fall.
$13-$14 per hour depending on experience
