The Persian-fusion band Navaz is a mix of Persian folk music, Sufi chants, along with Latin and jazz rhythms. Neda's hauntingly beautiful voice together with dazzling virtuoso performances adds up to an exciting and exotic musical journey.
Band Members:
Neda Jalali (vocals):
Neda is from Iran and sang for many years in clubs and restaurants in Europe. Although Neda mainly sings in Farsi, she also sings in Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, and English. She frequently opened the stage for well known Persian musicians such as Hayedeh, Aslani, and Leyla. In the late 1990s she toured England with Iranian superstar Moein.
Eric Tompkins (guitar, saz):
Since the 1970s Eric has played all kinds of guitar styles - country, blues, jazz, Latin and classical. A few years ago he recorded a CD titled Fellini's Hat Band which featured (among others) the brilliantly innovative mandolin playing of legendary Willie P. Bennett. In 2005 he produced a concert of his work with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra. Since then he has been working with Neda Jalali to create a new genre of world fusion music. In 2007 they recorded a CD together titled Navaz: East of West.
Hamin Honari (Tonbek, daf):
Born in 1983 in Iran, Hamin has been studying Tombak (the Persian drum) with Mr. Ramin Bahrami since 1998. He has performed with his family and the Ruh Afza Ensemble, in numerous concerts and music festivals across North America. In 2001, Hamin with Mr. Amir Koushkani, took part in the Silk Road Music Series and played at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He has also toured the United States and performed in several universities there.
Navid Goldrick (santour, oud):
Navid has studied santur since childhood and has studied oud (Arabic lute) with Persian master Hossein Behrooznia. He has toured with the Honari Family, and has performed in Canada and the U.S. More recently he has been a member of Parto, a world music ensemble featuring the work of composer Farshid Samandari. He is also an active member of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra .
John Bews (bass):
A regular member of the gypsy-fusion band Tambura Rasa, John has played with a variety of musicians around the Vancouver area. Playing both upright and electric bass has helped him get opportunities to work with projects like Radiogram, Mary Ancheta, Marnie Mains, Paula Toledo, and Transientworld, as well as appearances with the Fraser Valley Symphony Orchestra.
