Inspired by the wartime letters written by the playwrights' grandfather, A Soldier’s War follows the journey of five Canadian soldiers during World War II -- from basic training in Nova Scotia, through to D-Day and their return home. It is a story of brotherhood and friendship, honour, and the unrelenting desire to get home. A Soldier's War offers a glimpse of the impact repeated exposure to war-time action and trauma may have on a person and explores how those wartime actions may fundamentally change the "man".  The inaugural showing of this play was at the Globe Theatre's Shumiature Sandbox Series in Regina in 2016.

Presentation Series

When the Sunset Theatre Society first opened its doors in 2006 it knew that the lofty dreams of producing plays was going to have to be built over time.  This was in part due to the remoteness of  Wells, and also in part due to the need to build the infrastructure and audience to fulfill such an adventure. So the question became, how do you establish excellence without doing it yourself?  The answer, present other work that helps set a bench mark for excellence and professionalism.  A total of 43 plays have been presented to date  from all across the country.

 Mamahood:

Bursting into Light

A Profoundly Moving Ode to Motherhood

Written and Performed by Nicolle Nattress

September 1 & 2 at 8 pm

A mother, a playwright, and an actress, Jessie Award-nominated Nicolle Nattrass shares her story with humor. She courageously shares her desire to be a “PERFECT Mom”, to her discovery of being an “OLDER Parent”, to confronting the endless choices of parenthood, the pain of sleep deprivation, along with the heartache of her own post-partum experience.

“Nattrass is a big-hearted and fearlessly vulnerable performer whose charm is a great strength of this show. Mothers who’ve believed themselves to be alone in falling short of [motherhood] ideals are this show’s natural audience. Nattrass has given them a gift.”
-Kathleen Oliver, The Georgia Straight

"Nicolle Natt rass's solo show, Mamahood: Bursting Into Light is brilliant. She is a wonderful storyteller and fantastic character actor who nails the serious and comedic characters with ease and gusto. The topic of the realities of being a new mother are rarely talked about on stage or in public and that makes this show not only super entertaining but necessary. You will love the rock n' roll ride of Mamahood. Do yourself, and everyone mother you know, a favour and go see this show!"
-Tracey Erin Smith
Artistic Director of Toronto's SOULO Theatre Festival

The Other Theatre Company, the Kamloops-based theatre collective, who produced last year’s acclaimed Cherry Docs, is back on the boards this spring with a triple whammy of blues music, poetry and theatre, Rock ‘n Rail: Ghost Trains and Spitting Slag written by the acclaimed Canadian poet and playwright Mansel Robinson with songs written by Stewart MacDougal and additional music by local musician, Kyle Cavanagh,. This rare combination of styles was inspired by Robinson’s youth, spent in the railroad and mining towns of Northern Ontario. A tribute to the complex relationships between fathers and sons, generations of brakemen and hard rock miners, Rock ‘n Rail is told in the voice of the working man, the rough language of the slag heap hewn into the music and poetry of a crowded tavern on a Sudbury Saturday night. The kitchen table or the table in the bar at The Legion Hall was the book on which these people wrote their stories. Rock ‘n Rail is a tale of grace and grit, the poetry mainlined through character and song. The play stinks – of grease, of diesel fuel, of a thousand miles of steel and memories, as fresh in memory as this morning’s bacon and coffee.

Rock

Rail. Life on the railroad, life in the mines. Spoken Word and The Blues. The complex relationships between fathers and sons.
