The Blue Taffeta Dress Party and Other Stories

About the Playwright / Performer

Dennis Hawkins-Bogle (last at the Sunset in 2024, with Where is Grise Fiord?), returns with a collection of autobiographical stories about growing up gay in small-town northern BC.

He sat down with Tanya Hill, a reporter for The PEAK, ahead of a performance in Powell River.

"My passion for writing was reignited after a transformative summer on Cortes Island," explained Hawkins-Bogle. "I took a workshop at Hollyhock called Meditation, Ritual, Yoga, by a woman named Mara Branscomb."

He said he found himself daydreaming at the workshop and started to write little stories and have a lot of fun with it.

"I shared my writing while we [he and his husband Stephen] were on Cortes," said Hawkins-Bogle. "I came home and I was just on fire, and I wrote probably 30 or more stories, like The Blue Taffeta Party Dress."

His one-person performance is based on 19 autobiographical short stories from his childhood in a small, northern town, to his life as the principal of the high school he graduated from.

"As a gay kid growing up in an era of silence and shame, my voice was misrepresented, undermined, even sensationalized by the dominant culture," said Hawkins-Bogle. "Now, I’m setting the story straight, through moments of resilience, humour, heartbreak and hope."

"The audience will be taken on a journey, and experience the real highs, the humour, the inspiration and the breakthroughs, but they're also going to experience the gut-wrenching imagery around the homophobia I experienced as a child in high school," said Hawkins-Bogle. "But at the end, [the audience] will feel good, because there's such a resolution at the end around my journey."

The feedback so far, from high school students and other community members who have seen Hawkins-Bogle's play, has been positive.

"They speak about the integrity of my character, and how I portray my stories," he said. "There was one really funny comment [from a student] who wrote something along the lines of, 'the stories are so great because they're so short, and you really get on with the point; you don't linger around and make us wait.'"

Hawkins-Bogle said he doesn't necessarily use his writing as a healing tool, but approaches his work as a writer.

"I've always been able to detach myself from that experience and write it from a writer's point of view. I'm able to have a lot of fun with it and not get bogged down in the emotions a lot of the time."

He said for a while he spent a lot of time dealing with how he viewed himself and his own internalized homophobia.

"You adopt the values of your family or your community and so I had harsh, negative beliefs about myself, and it's really about coming to terms with that," said Hawkins-Bogle. "Nowadays, I try to embrace a life rich with purpose, creativity and community."

Queenage Wasteland • Created and Performed by Candy Roberts

Following up from her hit show, LARRY, award-winning comedy creator Candy Roberts presents the world premiere of QUEENAGE WASTELAND!

What if they lied? What if being a crazy cat lady is AMAZING? Like a modern-day Carol Burnett on acid, Candy Roberts spins hilarious misadventures of a Gen-X childhood survivor. From freeze, fawn & flee, to fuck-you, an autobiographical comedy about the pursuit of becoming a dangerous old woman.

With storytelling, stand-up and clown, Candy Roberts flips the “crazy cat lady” stereotype on its head and turns it into something intentional, desirable, and a little feral. She delivers true stories of trauma-response patterns with humour, relatability, and a truthful absurdity.

Let's forget about aging out of expectations. What does radical acceptance feel like?

This presentation is recommended for adults.

Punjabi Wabi Sabi • Created and Performed by Tahina Awan

Bollywood meets Breaking Bad?

What if Saddam Hussein had a love child with Britney Spears?

Bristling with hilarious storytelling, Punjabi Wabi Sabi is an irreverant, autobiographical and moving stand-up show by Tahina Awan: a middle-aged, delinquent, perverted, first-generation Canadian Muslim woman born in small town BC in the '70s.

Growing up GenX is hard - especially when you’re a Muslim girl, and you don’t want anyone to know! Join us as we follow our ill-behaved and sexually repressed narrator as she journeys through life trying to reconcile her identity amidst racism, self-rejection, deep trauma and raging hormones.

Oh, and the 1980s.

Part stand-up and part theatre, this is a one-woman show that gets into the nitty gritty of who we are versus who the world wants us to be. This is a story about how the human spirit rages against its cages, how we are basically all the same with different packaging, and how we are perhaps more perfect because we’re all fucked up.

Jake's Gift • Written and Performed by Julia Mackey

Celebrating 20 years

In June 2004, Julia Mackey travelled to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. She attended many ceremonies, walked the coastline and interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the occasion. The experiences of the veterans, her own discoveries, and a life long interest in Remembrance Day, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at The Sunset Theatre in Wells, BC.

THE PLAY

Jake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave.

Since 2007, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in over 250 communities across Canada, including International stops to Washington State, the UK and Normandy, France, for the 70th & 73rd Anniversary of D-Day. In June 2019, the company returned to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. They presented performances in both French and English at the Juno Beach Centre and La Salle de la Mer in Bernières sur Mer as well as other communities and venues in Normandy.

In December 2025, Julia received the Governor General Meritorious Service Cross Award for her work on Jake’s Gift.

The Ballad of Georges Boivin

“Beautifully written, directed, designed and acted, and it has so much to say about aging, friendship, and, above all, the enduring qualities of love.”

– Louis B. Hobson, Calgary Herald

About the Play

The Ballad of Georges Boivin is a heart-warming story familiar to anyone who has had an impressionable first love and after many decades is left wondering. It is a gentle comedy that appeals to all ages but has particular relevance to those who have lived a little longer.

We follow Georges, a 76 year old retired school teacher on a cross-country road trip as he attempts to re-connect with a person he hasn’t seen or heard from in over 50 years. All he has is a 50 year old address in Vancouver.

Accompanying Georges are three old geezers from the retirement home in Montreal who humour Georges and go with him on this adventure - all thinking that they’ll be home that night for dinner.

The play features Duval Lang, a prominent, award winning, Calgary actor as Georges and is directed by Bronwyn Steinberg. The production premiered at Lunchbox Theatre in the spring of 2024.

The Brain Porter & Amy Blanding • Double Album Release Party

TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE

Grandma, I’m Scared

The Brain Porter

Strapped with an upright bass, a 40 gallon suitcase on one foot, a pile of antler bones on the other, and enough FX pedals to kill a bear, The Brain Porter produces a sound that mystifies anyone with any sense of "Tradition". Combined with his unique light show, the Saturday night festival crowd, and house concert goer alike seem to find a musical void that they didnt know was missing after bearing witness to this hot mess of a show.

The songs take humour very seriously, and take surious subjects with enough salt to burn off the original flavour. Regularily getting compared to the likes of Beefheart, Ween, and Zappa, The Brain Porter Brings his own brand of strange to the world of just barely accesible enough.

Lullaby to My Tender Comrades

Amy Blanding

“Amy Blanding sings with conviction and soul. She delivers songs that tell stories that remind us of what is good.” –Kym Gouchie

Amy Blanding (she/her) is a queer, disabled musician who is unapologetically and unequivocally creating the music that needs to be heard. Known for her fierce songwriting, powerful vocals, and electrifying stage presence, she gathers moments from the Northern Canadian wild and shapes them into raw-edged, steadfast protest-folk.

Born in the four corners region of Navajo, Hopi, Ute, and Zuni territory (Colorado) and raised on the red shores of Epekwitk - Mi’kmaq territory (PEI) she took the long way home to the traditional and unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh (Prince George). Cutting her teeth with nationally recognized folk rock band Black Spruce Bog, and boasting collaborations with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, Kym Gouchie, Rachelle van Zanten, Marcel Gagnon, Reckless Burning, and countless other artists, Amy Blanding’s music seamlessly bridges the gap between audience, artist, and advocacy toward a greater possibility for the collective.

Spring 2026 will see the release of Blanding's highly anticipated sophomore album "Lullaby to My Tender Comrades" co-produced by John Raham (Afterlife Studios, Vancouver).

Running time of the show is 1 Act, 80 minutes in length.
Box Office & Concession Open at 7:30PM

Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me but Banjos Saved My Life isn’t just a show, it’s a cause. A heartfelt passion project that began as a nudge after Keith Alessi’s life took a major turn, it has been his mission to raise money for causes close to his heart. Through donations, including 100% of all artist fees, the show has raised over $1.3 Million Dollars (CAD) as of March 2026 for various charities including cancer organizations, music programs, community groups and artist funding and development.

The show has sold out runs across Canada, Off-Broadway in New York City, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland 3 years in a row. It has toured internationally including Canada, the US, England, Scotland and Australia.

Keith shares his exceptional true story of leaving the world of corporate board rooms behind to follow his long-delayed passion—playing the banjo! When faced with a deadly cancer battle, his musical pursuit took him on a journey that became the key to saving his life. Told through authentic storytelling, heartfelt humor and music, Keith’s story is an uplifting tale of challenge, triumph, and the healing power of the arts and music.

THE SHOW

Everyone has a story.  Your stories matter.

Keith Alessi had a story.

He was neither an actor nor a musician, and his journey to the stage was a highly improbable one. But this show is a reflection of the power and purpose our stories can have when we share them with the world in an authentic and honest way.

The grassroots sound of the banjo lures you in and brings you back to a simpler time in life, as Keith takes you on the journey of his unique personal story about how music was the catalyst to ultimately saving his life.

A heartwarming, true story of transformation, this show is like a homecoming, and has captivated audiences internationally.

Everyone has a story.

What’s yours?

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

FROM ERIKA CONWAY

Keith’s story is as important as it is compelling and a meaningful lesson for all of us.

Our stories change us, challenge us, and define us.  There is healing in speaking out the truth.  Life can throw us obstacles but, if we choose to look at it through a different lens, they can be the gifts to steer us back to ourselves and our souls.

This has been the heartbeat of the show and the magic I have attempted to capture and draw out in the sharing of his personal story.

Keith is an entertaining and dynamic storyteller but it's his bravery, authenticity and vulnerability on stage that holds the real power to this piece. We have purposefully constructed it in a way that allows him to engage you in the journey, disarm you with music and humor and then pull at your heartstrings.

It has been an absolute privilege to be a part of bringing this incredible story to the stage and it is my hope that it will cause you to reflect on your own journey, wake you up to listen to that nudge inside of you and unlock the passions that have been tucked away.

Keith Alessi - Writer/ Performer

Before taking to the stage, Keith was well known as a successful public company CEO, having run companies in both Canada and the United States.  He has been a college professor, entrepreneur and has served on numerous corporate and charitable Boards of Directors.

Keith has been touring the show internationally since 2018 across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Scotland.

about rae spoon

Rae Spoon is a musician, producer, and author. They have released thirteen solo albums spanning folk, country, indie rock, and electronic genres and published three books (Arsenal Pulp Press). Rae has been nominated for two Polaris Prizes, a Lambda Literary Award, and a Western Canadian Music Award. They have toured internationally (Canada, Europe, the USA, Australia, China, Japan, Korea).

Rae is a non-binary, trans artist who lives with multiple disabilities. Their newest album, Assigned Country Singer At Birth (2026), marks their return to country music. The album is equally subversive and relatable, a testament to the fact that country music is as expansive as the people who are connected to it. Songs about trans folks, harm reduction, Disability, inclusion, religious trauma, solidarity and opposing colonial land occupation may seem antithetical to traditional country, but they are as much a part of Spoon’s experiences as love songs, trucks and beer.

The Chimney Swallows
Oct

8:00 PM20:00

The Chimney Swallows

The Chimney Swallows are a unique folk music duo and microtheatre troupe composed of songwriters Raghu Lokanathan and Corwin Fox. Playing music together casually, while working for (& picketing at) the Victoria Public Library the friends discovered they had a mutual affinity for long conversations, song games and the stories of random strangers, & so began The Chimney Swallows.

This is a spontaneous opportunity to enjoy a special performance by this unique duo as Raghu now resides in Prince George and Corwin on Vancouver Island, so it is rare to see them together, much like the avian phenomenon after which they are named.

To create 'Cut Down' Raghu and Corwin memorized actual conversations they had with their elderly neighbours and used them to create a new conversation between two old men who never met in real life. 'Cut Down' is an exploration of aging and change, and gently touches upon the universal suffering and hilarity inherent to both. Please be advised there is some strong language.

'Has There Been a Time Since?' is a short spoken experience that leads the audience through a weekend at a music festival from the perspective of a veteran performer who is observing the experience they are having while they are in the throes of it.

This soundscape comes to life with the intimate and evocative tones of the Celtic lever harp fused with meticulously crafted electronic atmosphere and projections of Sharlene’s photographs.
